AEK Athens president Makis Angelopoulos attacked the EuroLeague during the press conference presenting the Basketball Champions League Final Four. Below are his statements.
Angelopoulos’ words: “I think everyone has realized that there is a basketball audience beyond the EuroLeague. The 1% cannot dominate all of European basketball. Only in basketball there is a limit. It is the only sport, how can you dampen a child’s dream? How can you tell him that you will play up to this point, that your dream goes up to this point. The Euroleague is the fault of the shareholders, the teams that decided this situation. I talked to the president of a historic Euroleague team and he told me it’s a double-edged sword. They are hurting the basketball industry and they are losing money. I think at some point things have to change. Water that stagnates and becomes muddy becomes dirty. You cannot continue with that logic. They pushed us to go to the Eurocup, but it doesn’t make sense. We would have 100,000 spectators and 85 percent of the revenue would go to the 11 Euroleague teams”.
