Adam Silver has defended the NBA’s vetting process for Mark Walter before he was approved as majority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers. Walter was already a minority investor when he purchased the Buss family’s controlling stake in June 2025.
Silver said the league contacted government agencies, insurance regulators and other leagues in which Walter held investments: “We found no red flags.” Walter was approved in October 2025, one month after federal authorities seized his phone and computer as part of investigations into his businesses.
Walter later agreed to sell the majority stake to Josh Kushner and Bob Iger at a record $12.5 billion valuation. Silver stressed that Walter was not under investigation by the NBA, while acknowledging that the league will continue assessing whether its ownership reviews can be improved.
