Pedro Martínez refused to make excuses after Real Madrid’s 115-112 overtime loss to Panathinaikos, praising his team’s character and mentality despite a long list of absences. “We fought well. At many points we managed to come back even when they had built leads,” Martínez said. “We showed a lot of character. In the end it was a coin-flip game and a few small details went against us.”
Real Madrid was without Campazzo, Maledon, Deck, Jantunen and Garuba, but Martínez did not want to hide behind the injury situation: “There are no excuses. We competed well with the players we had. We miss those who are unavailable, but we trust the players who are here.”
The coach also addressed Kendrick Nunn, who finished with 33 points and scored 23 in the fourth quarter, setting a new EuroLeague record for points in a final period: “He is a top-level player. He can shoot the three, get to the free-throw line and he is very difficult to defend. He played a great game, but we still could have won.” The defeat ended Real Madrid’s 11-game winning streak across Liga Endesa and EuroLeague.
