Three games opened EuroLeague Round 9 on Thursday: Crvena Zvezda-Bayern Munich, Maccabi Tel Aviv-Paris Basketball and Real Madrid-Fenerbahce. Here are the post-game comments from all six head coaches.
Crvena Zvezda-Bayern Munich 103-73
Ibon Navarro: “Congratulations to the players for the win. We played well both defensively and offensively. We had 29 assists, controlled the game and found answers against Bayern’s defense. We had prepared some details, especially the defense on Obst, and they worked very well. It was a team win, everybody played well and had a role.”
Navarro added: “We should never get too high after a win or too low after a loss. We still have many things to improve, from communication to defensive rebounding.”
Anton Gavel: “Congratulations to Navarro and Crvena Zvezda, they deserved to win. We were too soft and we were not there as a team. We cannot show up like this in EuroLeague games.”
“Crvena Zvezda played a good game, but we made it easy for them. After losses like this, you have to look at yourself and look in the mirror.”
Maccabi Tel Aviv-Paris Basketball 94-99
Oded Kattash: “In terms of energy, I think we started better and, even though not everything went well, we stayed in the game and fought. We were short in the backcourt and that created some difficulties for us.”
Kattash also openly addressed the transfer market: “We are on the market, we will add players. We will see changes soon.”
Maxime Lefèvre: “I’m tired after six days on the road, but I’m happy. I liked our toughness. When Maccabi took the lead again, things didn’t look good for us, but we managed to find the energy to regain control.”
“I didn’t like our execution at the end, but we managed to do what was needed, especially through our defensive intensity. I like the energy within the group right now: we are playing for each other, there is no selfishness.”
Real Madrid-Fenerbahce 95-76
Pedro Martinez: “You cannot relax against anyone, only when the game is over. You have to stay focused all the time and we did that well. We started with some turnovers and without defending well. With Campazzo and the other players coming in, we changed the defensive rhythm at the end of the first quarter. From there, we became more solid offensively.”
“In the second half, we managed to find the three-point shots that their defense had made difficult for us to create in the first half. It’s a good win, although there is a bitter feeling because of Jantunen’s injury, which looks quite serious. We have to congratulate the players for the determination they showed against a difficult team that defends very well.”
Sarunas Jasikevicius: “We don’t have an identity as a team. We are a group of very important names.”
“We have to find a way to play for each other. Individually, we can do many things, but that is not what is going to take us where we want to go. We have to find a way to play as a team.”
