FIBA has unveiled Suhail as the official mascot of the 2027 Basketball World Cup, which will be held in Doha, Qatar, from August 27 to September 12. The character is inspired by the Suhail star, known in Western culture as Canopus, which has guided sailors, nomads and pearl divers across the Gulf region for centuries.
Suhail is also traditionally regarded as a natural calendar marker in the Gulf, associated with the transition from the peak summer heat to cooler temperatures. The star is expected to be visible in Qatar’s night sky during the World Cup.
The mascot has been designed with meteorite-inspired origins, featuring crystalline surfaces and fragments of metal to symbolize a connection between sky and earth. Suhail will accompany players and fans throughout FIBA’s flagship event in 2027.
