Panathinaikos Takes Legal Action: “We Will Fight to Reclaim the Titles Taken from Us”

The Panathinaikos basketball club has issued a strongly worded statement denouncing what it describes as years of unfair refereeing and attacking the Greek basketball system. The Athens club has also announced plans to take legal action to seek redress for what it believes has been taken from it.

For years, KAE PANATHINAIKOS has been subjected to outrageous refereeing by very specific individuals who continue to be appointed illegally and repeatedly. It loses titles, plays behind closed doors in an arena it paid for with its own money, and pays hundreds of thousands of euros in fines because its owner, Dimitris Giannakopoulos, publicly condemns and speaks out against the disgusting things everyone sees but remains silent about. He has been targeted, subjected to a smear campaign, banned from watching his own team, and prevented from attending his father’s memorial service.

KAE PANATHINAIKOS continues to play games with referees who have faced criminal prosecutions for serious felonies, with referees who keep hundreds of thousands of euros in cash in their homes, and with referees who show no respect for the sport. It continues to play within a rotten system that violates what we love most: basketball.

You tried to wear us down. You tried to turn every ideal, every principle of logic, every reality upside down. You believed you were succeeding. However, you forgot something crucial. PANATHINAIKOS is not trophies, titles, jerseys or individuals. PANATHINAIKOS IS A VALUE. And those of us who serve this club know very well that by defending it, we are defending its history, the shamrock, JUSTICE and its PRINCIPLES.

KAE PANATHINAIKOS will take legal action to claim what has been stolen by a regime of filth. We owe it to our fans, who endured this ordeal live on television, and, of course, to our players and coaches, who were denied what they deserved. And we will do it. This will be our next victory against the regime.
