Türkiye have unveiled their 17-man preliminary roster for the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers, with Houston Rockets star Alperen Sengun surprisingly left out of head coach Ergin Ataman’s squad.
No official reason was given for Sengun’s absence despite the 23-year-old having been one of the national team’s cornerstone players in recent years.
Even without Sengun, Türkiye’s roster still features plenty of high-level talent, including Adem Bona, Cedi Osman, Furkan Korkmaz, Ömer Yurtseven, Sertaç Şanlı, Ercan Osmani, and naturalized guard Malachi Flynn. Newly signed Dallas Mavericks wing Tarik Biberovic is also absent.
Türkiye enter the second round of qualifying in a commanding position after finishing the opening stage with a perfect 6-0 record, putting them in an excellent position to qualify for the 2027 FIBA World Cup in Qatar.
The team will host Lithuania on August 28 in Istanbul before traveling to face Iceland on August 31.
Before the official games, Ataman will trim the preliminary squad to the final roster.
The preliminary squad includes:
Adem Bona, Berke Ibrahim Ugurlu, Cedi Osman, Darius Karatasu, Ercan Osmani, Erkan Yilmaz, Furkan Korkmaz, Kenan Sipahi, Malachi Flynn, Metecan Birsen, Onuralp Bitim, Omer Yurtseven, Omer Kutluay, Sertac Sanli, Sehmus Hazer, Yigit Arslan and Yigitcan Saybir.
