Iceland pulled off a huge road win in Manchester, edging Great Britain 88-86 in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 European Qualifiers. Great Britain led for more than 32 minutes and went up by as many as 11 points in the second quarter, but Iceland stayed alive and finished stronger.
The key moment came with 1:16 left, when Martin Hermannsson knocked down a clutch three-pointer to tie the game at 84-84 and swing momentum Iceland’s way. Great Britain still had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but Carl Wheatle’s long three-point attempt missed the mark. Jon Axel Gudmundsson led Iceland’s comeback with 25 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals, finishing with a 29 efficiency rating.
Hermannsson added 20 points and 4 assists, Elvar Fridriksson posted 11 points and 10 assists, while Kristinn Palsson scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from deep. Joshua Uduje paced Great Britain with 23 points, 4 rebounds and 6 assists, but it was not enough. With the win, Iceland moved to second place in Group D at 3-3 and advanced to the Second Round; Great Britain were eliminated at 1-5.
