Masai Ujiri has officially joined the ownership group of the Toronto Tempo, the city’s new WNBA franchise. The move was confirmed by both ESPN and the team’s official announcement, which places Ujiri alongside the ownership group led by Larry Tanenbaum.
The move marks Ujiri’s return to professional basketball in Toronto after his long run with the Raptors, highlighted by the 2019 NBA title. Reports say Ujiri views the Tempo as a meaningful project in a city he knows deeply and at a time when women’s sports continue to expand rapidly.
Alongside his ownership role, Ujiri will also help launch Tempo Rising, a mentorship platform for women-identifying and non-binary coaches, working with general manager Monica Wright Rogers and head coach Sandy Brondello.
