Jonathan Kuminga enjoyed a breakout first game with the Atlanta Hawks, posting a season-high 27 points in a 119-98 blowout win over the Washington Wizards. Kuminga added seven rebounds, four assists and two steals, mixing thunderous dunks with made 3-pointers while flashing the all-around game Atlanta hoped to unlock.
Acquired with Buddy Hield at the trade deadline in the deal that sent Kristaps Porzingis to the Golden State Warriors, Kuminga stepped into a bigger-than-expected role after All-Star forward Jalen Johnson left in the first quarter with a hip flexor injury and didn’t return. “He connected with his teammates and let the game come to him,” Hawks coach Quin Snyder said.
Kuminga had missed his first six games with Atlanta while recovering from a left knee bone bruise suffered late in his Warriors stint, where his minutes had dwindled. “Everybody has an opinion… we’re trying to win as many games as we can here,” Kuminga said after his smiling, high-energy debut.
