NBA commissioner Adam Silver said a decision on domestic expansion will be made sometime in 2026, providing the clearest timeline yet on the issue. Speaking in Las Vegas ahead of the NBA Cup Final, Silver confirmed the league continues to evaluate multiple markets, with Seattle and Las Vegas at the forefront.
Silver explained that expansion is a complex economic decision because it involves “selling equity in the current league,” moving owners from a 1/30 share to 1/32 if two teams are added. The NBA is currently working with its teams to gauge interest and better understand the financial projections for potential expansion franchises.
Expansion has been discussed publicly for five years, but this marks the first time a decision window has been identified. Silver praised both Seattle and Las Vegas as “incredible cities” and said he has no doubt Las Vegas could support an NBA team, given the league’s long-standing presence in the market.
