James Harden and Kawhi Leonard said they were “shocked” when they woke up to the news that the LA Clippers had decided to part ways with Chris Paul.
The move followed a three-hour late-night meeting between team president Lawrence Frank and Paul at the hotel in Atlanta.
Sources told ESPN that Paul and Tyronn Lue had not been on speaking terms for weeks, with his hard-edged leadership style viewed as disruptive by the organization.
Lue, however, defended him: “We’re not 5-16 because of CP. It just wasn’t a good fit for what he was looking for. I didn’t want to see it end like this.”
For now, both sides are in a holding pattern: Paul has been sent back to Los Angeles, can’t be traded before Dec. 15, and a waiver is complicated by the first apron hard cap and roster rules.
According to ESPN, the 12-time All-Star and Clippers icon is expected to retire at the end of this season, his 21st in the NBA.
