Ahead of next Wednesday’s meeting in Geneva between FIBA, EuroLeague and the NBA, Mundo Deportivo offers important background information. This is a significant development in the world of journalism, following our article yesterday.
According to José Ignacio Huguet, the EuroLeague’s goal is to find common ground with the NBA after rejecting a collaboration offer from the North American league some time ago. The NBA had proposed itself as a commercial partner.
Since then, the NBA has gone its own way and has not contacted the EuroLeague again, due to the frosty atmosphere that became apparent a few months ago when EuroLeague CEO Paulius Motiejunas went to New York but failed to meet Adam Silver.
On Wednesday in Geneva, the EuroLeague will play its final cards in an attempt to rejoin a project that now appears to be well underway. Mundo Deportivo cites Barcelona, Real Madrid, Fenerbahçe and Olimpia Milano as teams being considered by the NBA, alongside football clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City, and cities such as Berlin. London, however, is not mentioned.
As things stand, a major split in European basketball seems imminent, with the EuroLeague set to emerge as the loser. And ignored. Next Wednesday will be a decisive moment.
