According to Niko Yenibayrak of SportsDigitale, Fenerbahce is reportedly very interested in bringing Simone Fontecchio back to Europe.
The report stems from recent speculation surrounding a potential release of the Italian forward by the Miami Heat—but that’s where some confusion begins.
Ira Winderman of The Sun Sentinel simply mentioned in a mailbag that, in his opinion, Fontecchio would be the most likely candidate if the Heat were to use the stretch provision to get under the luxury tax threshold.
Currently, Miami is only about $1.6 million above the limit—a relatively small amount by NBA standards. To put things in perspective, the Heat could easily solve the issue by trading away any player before the trade deadline.
Alternatively, the stretch provision could be used on someone like Terry Rozier, who is currently involved in a betting investigation.
So, while it’s likely that the reigning EuroLeague champions are genuinely interested in Fontecchio, his return to Europe may not be imminent.
Even if the Heat were to part ways with him, the Italian forward would become a free agent, free to sign with any team—NBA or European.
Fontecchio is entering his prime, and with a strong EuroBasket campaign, he could become an attractive option for several teams on both sides of the Atlantic.
