2023-2024 EuroLeague roster | Gran Canaria is the new entry, Virtus hope

With Gran Canaria’s success in the EuroCup, the roster for the 2023-2024 EuroLeague season is taking shape. Thirteen teams have multi-year licenses, with Asvel and Bayern Munich joining the original eleven (Efes, Baskonia, Barcelona, CSKA, Fenerbahce, Maccabi, Olimpia Milano, Olympiacos, Panathinaikos, Real Madrid, Zalgiris Kaunas).

However, CSKA remains suspended for the upcoming season, bringing the total back to thirteen with Monaco, which confirmed its license (winning the EuroCup two years ago) by participating in the playoffs (for the second year in a row). Gran Canaria is the fourteenth team after their home victory on Wednesday night against Turk Telekom Ankara.

The fifteenth spot is likely to remain with Alba Berlin. The Germans’ two-year license is expiring, and while they do not seem to be on the verge of joining the roster permanently, another annual pass appears to be the most widely accepted solution.

Three spots remain open. It’s worth noting who was in play this year. Virtus Bologna won the 2021-2022 EuroCup but did not confirm its license by failing to qualify for this year’s postseason. Red Star won the last Aba-Liga. Valencia and Partizan had used a wild-card.

One spot remains for the competition involving former Yugoslav teams. We are down to two. Virtus Bologna, Valencia, and the Aba-Liga finalist, whether it is Red Star or Partizan (assuming they make it to the final), are vying for the remaining spots.
