Zalgiris Kaunas has made an addition to the roster. The Lithuanian champions have signed a contract until the end of the season with 27-year-old guard Edmond Sumner, who has spent the last five years in the NBA.
“Zalgiris was looking for a new addition for some time, we had few options, but we didn’t want to rush. We are happy that our efforts capitalized and that we were able to reach an agreement with a player who has a lot of experience at the highest level. We hope that Edmond’s adaptation in Europe will not take too long,” said Zalgiris Kaunas Director Paulius Jankunas.
Sumner, who played for Xavier Musketeers University, was selected by the New Orleans Pelicans as the 52nd pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, and immediately traded to the Indiana Pacers.
The 198 cm tall guard spent four years there, while also playing for the G-League’s Fort Wayne Mad Ants. His teammate in Indiana was Lithuanian Domantas Sabonis.
The new Zalgiris player had his best year in Pacers jersey in the 2020-2021 season. In 55 games, he averaged almost 16 minutes on the floor, scoring 7.5 points and making 40% of his three-pointers.
In the 2022-2023 season, Sumner was signed by the Brooklyn Nets. There, he again played more than 50 games, averaging 7 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists.
Sumner parted ways with the Nets last summer and signed with the Charlotte Hornets, where he played four pre-season games but became a free agent a month later.
Sumner is expected to arrive in Kaunas this week, but will not be able to travel with the team to the EuroLeague Round 11 game in Milan.
