Warriors, Kuminga won’t reach new deal ahead of deadline

Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors have not reached a contract renewal agreement enters the scheduled deadline.

According to ESPN sources, the Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga will not reach a new contract extension agreement before the deadline for rookie contract extensions scheduled for 18:00 ET. The Warriors and Kuminga’s agent, Aaron Turner of Verus Basketball, have been in discussions for the past few months, but negotiations never came to fruition.

Kuminga believes in his talent and his ability to become a star in the league, and the Warriors have seen statistics that measure his growth similarly to the early years of the Clippers’ Kawhi Leonard, Indiana’s Pascal Siakam and Boston’s Jaylen Brown.

The Warriors, however, prefer to see Kuminga’s growth first in the upcoming season. The relationship between Kuminga and Steve Kerr is also something Warriors executives are monitoring, according to sources. Despite the failed deal, the Warriors will still have the rights to Kuminga in free agency next summer; in fact, the player will be an unrestricted free agent.
