Vassilis Spanoulis: “Free throws? That’s the criteria, but it’s strange”

The Monaco coach reacts after Game 4 loss: “22 points from the line in the second half. My job is to focus on basketball”

Following Monaco’s loss to Barcelona in Game 4, coach Vassilis Spanoulis voiced concerns about the officiating during the second half. “We played great defense, but they scored 44 points – 22 of those from free throws. That’s the game, that’s the criteria,” he said in the post-game press conference.

In the flash interview, Spanoulis added: “There was a different criteria after halftime. I don’t complain, it’s not my job. I just prepare the team.”

The Greek coach credited the pressure applied by the home crowd and staff: “Barcelona’s fans and coach did their job. It’s not up to me to comment. It’s strange, but I care only about basketball.”

Looking ahead to Game 5, Spanoulis admitted Monaco needs to improve: “Shooting 21% from three and having 19 turnovers, you can’t win. I’ve been in many 2-2 situations as a player. Now we have to stay calm and shoot better. I hope we’ll be ready on Tuesday.”
