The Sacramento Kings finally ended a franchise-worst 16-game losing streak, beating the injury-plagued Memphis Grizzlies 123-114 on Monday night. Sacramento hadn’t won since Jan. 16 vs Washington, and its previous road win came Dec. 6 at Miami, with its only road victory against a Western Conference opponent this season dating back to Nov. 22 at Denver.
Sacramento held on behind a strong fourth quarter from Russell Westbrook and two-way player Daeqwon Plowden, who scored 10 points each in the period and combined for 20 of the Kings’ 24 fourth-quarter points. DeMar DeRozan and Plowden finished with 19 points apiece, while rookie center Maxime Raynaud posted 10 points and 13 rebounds, saying the win boosts momentum and spirits.
Coach Doug Christie acknowledged the weight of the skid: “Obviously, you do not want that with your name,” while praising how the group kept evolving. DeRozan added: “Nobody wants to lose… I just felt good to get that monkey off your back,” with players describing relief more than celebration after the final buzzer.
