Timberwolves sign Charlie Brown Jr.

Minneapolis/St. Paul – Minnesota Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas today announced the team has signed guard Charlie Brown Jr. to a training camp contract. Per team policy, terms of the agreement were not released.

Brown Jr., 6-6, totaled 20 points and 4 rebounds last season in 10 games with Atlanta. He was originally signed by the Hawks on July 1, 2019.

The 23-year-old played in 29 games in the G League for the College Park Skyhawks where he averaged 17.1 points on 42.2% shooting and 6.7 rebounds per game.

Brown Jr. played two seasons for Saint Joseph’s University, averaging 16.0 points and 5.6 rebounds in 63 games. As a sophomore, he was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second Team as well as won the A-10 scoring crown, averaging 19.0 points per game.

NBA planning to administer a daily point-of-care and rapid COVID testing system for 2020-21

The NBA is set to administer a daily point-of-care, rapid testing system for the upcoming season, sources told Shams Charania and Fred Katz of The Athletic.

The tests will deliver results within 30 minutes when a team is at home, and within 90 minutes during road games. Should a test return invalid, players will take another test at least 30 minutes after the results of the initial test.

Los Angeles Clippers’ Paul George signs a maximum contract extension

Paul George signs a maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Clippers, his agent Aaron Mintz tells ESPN.

The Clippers are extending George’s contract for an additional four years, $190M on top of the $35.4M guaranteed him in the 2020-2021 season. George will have a new player option before the 2024-2025 season.

Thunder Signs Moses Brown and Josh Hall to Two-Way Contracts

The Oklahoma City Thunder has signed center Moses Brown and forward Josh Hall to Two-Way Contracts, it was announced by Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti.
Brown spent the 2019-20 season as a two-way player for the Portland Trail Blazers.
Hall spent his last two seasons at Moravian Prep in Hudson, N.C..

Pau Gasol would love to join Lakers to play with Marc

Pau Gasol would love to return to the Lakers, where he won two NBA titles, and play along with his brother Marc who recently signed a deal with the NBA reigning champions.

Per ESPN, “There is meaning and history there,” said Gasol, who won titles with the Lakers alongside Kobe Bryant in 2009 and 2010. “I’m not going to lie. It would be very special, and now that my brother [Marc] is there, even more special. But I’m not in a position now to be very demanding. I don’t have 10 offers on the table.”

Pau Gasol has not appeared in a game since March 2019 and has undergone two surgeries since then to repair stress fractures in the navicular bone in his left foot.

“I want the opportunity to contribute — to feel needed,” Gasol said. “Not just to be there. That’s not who I am. I want to enjoy it, and players usually enjoy playing.”

Mavericks to release JJ Barea, sign Courtney Lee

The Dallas Mavericks are waiving JJ Barea and signing Courtney Lee.

Per ESPN, The Mavs anticipated releasing Barea, 36, when they signed him to a one-year deal worth the veterans minimum of $2.6 million last month. That gave the team 16 players with guaranteed contracts, one more than the regular-season roster limit.
Sources said Dallas owner Mark Cuban wanted to reward Barea, a key role player on the 2010-11 championship team who has played 11 of his 14 seasons with the Mavericks, for his contributions to the franchise over the years.

Barea remains determined to play in the NBA this season before retiring as a player and pursuing a career in coaching, sources said.

Thunder sign Theo Maledon, Aleksej Pokusevski

The Oklahoma City Thunder announced they have signed rookies Aleksej Pokusevski and Theo Maledon.

Pokusevski, the 17th pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, signed his Rookie Scale contract with the Thunder. He averaged 10.8 points, 7.9 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.8 blocks and 1.3 steals with Olympiacos B in the Greek Second Division.

Maledon, the 34th pick in the 2020 draft, spent the 2019-20 season with ASVEL Lyon-Villeurbanne in the EuroLeague and France’s top league, Jeep Elite. The terms of the deal with OKC were not disclosed.

James Harden reportedly willing to expand list of teams for a trade beyond Brooklyn Nets

James Harden has indicated to the Houston Rockets he would be willing to accept a trade to a contending team beyond the Brooklyn Nets, which includes the Philadelphia 76ers, reported Adrian Wojnarowski and Tim MacMahon of ESPN. Harden’s preference has been to join Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving with the Nets.

The Rockets and the Sixers have had no substantive talks about a potential Harden deal, with new Sixers president Morey reportedly believed to have no interest in breaking up his duo of Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons.

Nuggets to sign Monte Morris to three-year, $27 million contract extension

Monte Morris and the Denver Nuggets have reached a three-year contract extension agreement.

Per Denver Post, The Nuggets and backup point guard Monte Morris agreed to a three-year, $27 million extension Monday night, two league sources told The Denver Post.

The deal, which is fully guaranteed, offers incentives which could push it closer to $9.4 million annually, according to one source. The extension kicks in at the start of the 2021-22 season.

Timberwolves hire Rudy Tomjanovich as Player Personnel Consultant

Minnesota Timberwolves President of Basketball Operations Gersson Rosas today announced the additions of Joseph Blair (Assistant Coach), Aaron Blackshear (Director of Analytics), Josh Gershon (College Scouting Coordinator), Javair Gillett (Vice President of Sports Science and Player Performance), Tru Pettigrew (Vice President of Player Programs/Diversity and Inclusion), Nick Reick (Video Associate), Pat Sullivan (Player Development/Defensive Associate) and Rudy Tomjanovich (Player Personnel Consultant). The promotion of Tony Adams to Director of Team Security was also announced.

“We are pleased to announce the additions of Joseph, Aaron, Josh, Javair, Tru, Nick, Pat and Rudy to the Timberwolves basketball operations staff,” said Rosas. “We continue our efforts to build a world class basketball organization and it is all about our people. These individuals are incredibly talented and possess skills and experience that will assist in building a sustainable winning program in Minnesota. In addition, Tony is a dedicated and loyal member of our family and his promotion is well deserved.”
Blair joins the Timberwolves coaching staff after spending the previous season as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers. Prior to the 76ers, Blair spent four seasons with the Houston Rockets G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, one of which as head coach (2018-19). Blair led the team to the 2019 G League title over the Long Island Nets after amassing a 34-16 overall record. In 2015, he originally joined the Rockets organization as an assistant with Rio Grande Valley. He also spent two seasons as an assistant at his alma mater, the University of Arizona.

As Director of Analytics, Blackshear will oversee the analytics department while working with Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations Sachin Gupta. Blackshear joins the Timberwolves after spending four seasons with the Detroit Pistons, including the 2019-20 season as the Director of Research and Analytics.

Gershon will act as the team’s College Scouting Coordinator, assisting in draft preparation and player personnel evaluations. He is a former national recruiting analyst for 247 Sports and held similar roles for Scout/FOX Sports.
Gillett joins the Timberwolves as the Vice President of Sports Science and Player Performance with more than 20 years of experience in the industry, most recently serving as the Director of Athletic Performance for the Houston Rockets (2014-2020). Gillett also spent 10 years with the Detroit Tigers as the club’s Head Strength and Conditioning Coach.

Pettigrew will oversee the Timberwolves player programs and diversity and inclusion efforts, as one of the country’s top Millennial Empowerment experts and cross-generational thought leaders. As the founder of Tru Access, Pettigrew serves as an inspiration and empowerment consultant to help individuals and organizations bridge gaps across areas that cause division, dysfunction and separation.
Reick joins the Timberwolves after spending three seasons with the Salt Lake City Stars, the G League affiliate of the Utah Jazz, as the Director of Basketball operations. Reick, a native of Germany, has served in a variety of roles with the German National Team, UCLA Women’s Basketball, Los Angeles Clippers, Chicago Bulls, Westchester Knicks and Dallas Wings.

Sullivan comes to the Timberwolves after spending two seasons as an Assistant Coach with the New York Knicks. He has collected more than a decade of coaching experience in the League, with stints in Los Angeles with the Clippers, New Jersey Nets, Detroit Pistons and Washington Wizards. As a college coach, Sullivan served as an assistant coach for three seasons at his alma mater, the University of North Carolina and for two seasons as assistant coach for the women’s team at NC-Wilmington.

Tomjanovich, a 2020 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame inductee, will provide perspective on draft, trade and free agency prospects and processes for the Timberwolves. He joins the staff after registering a 20+ year NBA coaching career, including Head Coach of the Houston Rockets and the Los Angeles Lakers. Tomjanovich coached USA Basketball Men’s National Team to a gold medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics. He was selected second-overall in the 1970 NBA Draft by the San Diego (Houston) Rockets, leading to an 11-year professional career with the club. Tomjanovich was selected as an NBA All-Star five times throughout his career, including four consecutive seasons (1974-1977).

Adams has served as a traveling member of Minnesota’s security team for two years. He has also been a member of the Minneapolis Police Department for more than 30 years, where he started assisting with security measures for all Timberwolves home games in 1996. While on the force, Officer Adams made it his own personal goal to take steps in bridging the gap between the community and the police department, helping organize a Police Activities League (PAL) — a program for third through 12th graders to encourage participation in sports.

Spurs guard DeRozan “doing well” after home invasion scare

San Antonio Spurs guard DeMar DeRozan said “everything is good” with him and his family after an intruder entered their house while they were home over two weeks ago.

TMZ reported that on November 19 that DeRozan heard a commotion in a part of the family’s Los Angeles-area house that included one of his children. When DeRozan checked it out, he found the trespasser and chased the man out of his home, according to TMZ.

The individual was arrested when he returned to the gated community, with TMZ reporting that the man told police he was looking for Kylie Jenner’s home, not DeRozan’s.

Raptors reportedly wary of offer more than a 1-year deal to Marc Gasol

The Toronto Raptors were weary of offering Marc Gasol more than a one-year contract, sources told Ian Begley of SNY. The decision is probably motivated by the Raptors will to preserve maximum cap space flexibility for next offseason.

Spanish center would later go on to sign a two-year, minimum veteran deal with reigning NBA champions Los Angeles Lakers.

Kings reportedly looking for draft picks in eventual Buddy Hield trade

The Sacramento Kings are looking to receive draft compensation in any trade involving Buddy Hield, sources told Ian Begley of SNY. No trade involving Hield was imminent as of earlier this week.

Hield’s relationship with the Kings seems to have improved after Sacramento first hired the guard’s former coach in New Orleans, Alvin Gentry, as Luke Walton’s assistant and later when the Kings renounced to match Atlanta’s offer sheet for Bogdan Bogdanovic.
