Tyler Nelson signing back with Rostock Seawolves

Tyler Nelson is signing back with German BBL newcomer Rostock Seawolves, sources told Sportando.

Nelson played a big role for the Seawolves last season as he helped them move up from the ProA to the top division. He averaged 16.8 points in limited playing time and shot the ball with tremendous efficiency (49.8% FG / 46.4% 3P / 89.5% FT).

Nelson has also played in the NBA G League during his career.

Valencia, Gran Canaria among teams interested in Diego Flaccadori

According to Il Corriere del Trentino the next few days will be key for the future of Diego Flaccadori.
The player, who has a multi-year offer from Aquila Trento on the table, has reportedly attracted interest abroad from Valencia and Gran Canaria.

Flaccadori last year produced 15.3 points and 3.7 assists per game in LBA, and 10.4 with 2.9 assists in Eurocup.

Former Barcelona big man Rolands Smits signs with Zalgiris

Zalgiris Kaunas’ frontline will be strengthened by Latvian big man Rolands Smits. The 207 cm tall player, who celebrated his 27th birthday last week, has signed a two-year contract.

Smits has been playing for FC Barcelona for the last four years, and reached the EuroLeague Final Four for two consecutive seasons.

The versatile Latvian, who can play at the power forward and center positions, has come off the bench under Sarunas Jasikevicius and has been the understudy of Nikola Mirotic, the EuroLeague MVP, occasionally playing as a center.

In the Spanish championship, Smits averaged 5.2 points and 2.9 rebounds, shooting at a 35.3% clip from long range. In the EuroLeague, his stats were similar: 4.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in an average of 15 minutes on the court.

Born in Valmiera, Smits moved to Spain at the age of 16 and started his professional career with Fuenlabrada. During his time there, Smits was named the best young player in the EuroCup during the 2016-2017 season, which brought him to the attention of Barcelona.

Smits has played for the Latvian youth national teams of all ages and made his men’s team debut in 2014 at the age of 19.

Panathinaikos signs Panagiotis Kalaitzakis

Panathinaikos OPAP Athens has signed small forward Panagiotis Kalaitzakis on a two-year deal with an option for a third season, the club announced Saturday. Kalaitzakis (2.00 meters, 23 years old) arrives from Lietkabelis Panevezys of Lithuania, where last season he had a breakout campaign in the 7DAYS EuroCup. In 19 EuroCup games with Lietkabelis, Kalaitzakis averaged 13.0 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.3 steals in almost 28 minutes on court to help the team reach the playoffs.

“I feel very happy and blessed for the opportunity given to me to play for one of the biggest teams in Europe”, Kalaitzakis said. “What I have to do now is to work hard with my teammates and coaches to succeed. A big dream of mine has come true, I am part of the big Panathinaikos family and I can’t wait to compete in the green shirt”.

London Lions hire Ryan Schmidt as head coach

The London Lions are pleased to announce Ryan Schmidt will be taking over as Head Coach ahead of the upcoming season.

Coach Schmidt has a breadth of top-flight coaching experience, having spent four seasons as working an assistant coach with Toronto Raptors NBA G-League affiliate, Raptors 905, before spending 3-years as Head Coach for the Hamilton Honey Badger of the Canadian Elite Basketball League.

Reflecting on his previous experience, Schmidt said,

“I HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO WORK AND LEARN UNDER SOME GREAT COACHES IN MY PROFESSIONAL CAREER THUS FAR AND WILL BRING THAT EXPERIENCE WITH ME AS WE CONTINUE TO BUILD THIS CLUB.”

He went on to add,

“I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING OUR ROSTER BUILT AND BEGINNING THE WORK THAT IT WILL TAKE TO WIN DOMESTICALLY IN THE BBL AS WELL AS IN THE EUROCUP THIS UPCOMING SEASON”

Rounding out the coaching staff this season will be Robert Youngblood, Nikhil Lawry, and Polat Kaya.

Papagiannis’ game developed in Athens after an uneventful first stint in the NBA: he averaged 10.3 ppg, 8.2 rpg and 1.7 bpg in the 2021/22 Euroleague, being the league’s best rebounder and recognized in the All-Euroleague Second Team

Levi Randolph joining Hapoel Jerusalem

Levi Randolph has signed a contract with Hapoel Jerusalem of the Israeli Winner League and Basketball Champions League, his agency, SLASH Sports, told Sportando.

Randolph, a veteran swingman from Alabama, was recently named the MVP of the inaugural BNXT League (Belgium/Netherlands) season, as he averaged 15.8 points on 51% from the field and 47% from 3-point range for Belgian team Filou Oostende.

Randolph has also played in the NBA G League, Italy, France and the Australian NBL during his career.

Valerio Mazzola signs 2-year deal with Carpegna Prosciutto Basket Pesaro

Valerio Mazzola is a new player of Carpegna Prosciutto Basket Pesaro, the italian team announced.

The power forward spent the last 4 seasons with Reyer Venezia.

Last year Mazzola averaged 4.1 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in Eurocup.

Arnas Butkevicius signs deal with Zalgiris

After announcing the signing of Laurynas Birutis earlier in the month, Zalgiris brings forward its second newcomer for the upcoming season, as Lithuanian international Arnas Butkevicius joins the team.

Butkevicius spent the last five years in the capital of Lithuania, as he recently captained Rytas Vilnius. Last season he led his former team to the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL) title, earning Finals MVP honors in the meanwhile.

The forward averaged 8.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 13 efficiency per game, and improved his contribution to 11 points and 15.6 efficiency in the league finals

Butkevicius‘ numbers in the Basketball Champions League were similar, as the 29-year-old averaged 7.4 points and 5 rebounds.

“First of all, I would like to thank Zalgiris organization for believing in me and for the chance to compete in the highest level. I can promise I will give my all to the team. The decision to join Zalgiris wasn’t difficult, as the club and coach Kazys have shown big interest. I know how ambitious this team is, so I’m looking forward to join forces”, – said Butkevicius.

Butkevicius has represented Zalgiris’ youth team in the EuroLeague youth tournament. During his career, he has also worn the jerseys of Neringa, Sakalai, Lietkabelis and Neptunas. With the latter club, under the guidance of current Zalgiris coach Kazys Maksvytis, Butkevicius also made his EuroLeague debut.

“Arnas’ stability and abilities in recent years have not left any doubts, so we wanted to see him in Kaunas. We know each other well, we worked together in the EuroLeague, which I think is very important for a basketball player returning to the top level”, – said coach Maksvytis.

The 196 cm tall player signed a two-year contract with Zalgiris Kaunas.
