ACB proposes a 12-teams tournament with a best-of-5 final, no relegations

According to journalist Ignacio Ojeda, ACB will propose to all clubs a 12-teams tournament played in one location with two groups of six teams each, with a best-of-5 final between the two top teams from each group. Season won’t have relegations to LEB Oro.

Proposal will be discussed tomorrow in a teleconference meeting. Tournament would start, if approved, on June 15.

CBA to resume the season without foreign players?

Chinese side Liaoning general manager, whose team feature former NBA players Lance Stephenson, Brandon Bass and OJ Mayo, has reportedly advised the league to resume the season without foreign players, according to journalist Zhang Duo.

A handful of US players has already left China after the latest CBA postponement.

Bilbao reportedly working to extend Ben Lammers

Bilbao is working to extend and improve the contract of Ben Lammers.
The big man out of Georgia Tech was the top shot-blocker in ACB with 1.9 rejection per game.
Lammers averaged also 7.7 points and 4.9 rebounds in just 19 minutes per game, shooting 58% from the field and 70% from the foul line.

Estonian prospect Kerr Kriisa reportedly commits to Arizona

19-year-old Estonian point guard Kerr Kriisa has committed to the University of Arizona, according to Eurohopes.

Kriisa has spent these past two seasons with Zalgiris Kaunas. He played mainly with their farm team but had the chance to make his debut in the EuroLeague in October against ASVEL. He also spent part of this season on loan with LKL team Prienai, averaging 4.1 points and 2.2 assists in 13.8 minutes.

Frankie Ferrari: I take pride in being Italian. I’d be honored to represent the country

Frankie Ferrari said that he would love to play for the Italian National Team.
The player has a dual citizenship American-Italian and he is eligible to play as Italian without counting in the quota for passports.

Ferrari spoke with Chema de Lucas of Mibaloncesto.

Ferrari spent the first part of the season with Manresa before suffering a season ending injury. He was averaging more than 11 points and 5 assists in ACB.

The passport was a huge thing for me as I developed in college. My whole family is their dual citizenships with the USA & Italy. We take great pride in being Italian and honoring those roots. According to la Gazzetta dello Sport, Zalgiris Kaunas guard Edgaras Ulanovas and Barcellona playmaker Malcolm Delaney are among the players Olimpia Milan is targeting for the next season.

This year Ulanovas averaged 8.3 points and 2 assist in Euroleague.

Delaney, who confirmed Milan’s interest a few days ago, played 26 Euroleague games, scoring 10.2 points and dishing 4.7 assist.

The former Notre Dame guard this year played for Rasta Vechta, with averages of 12.7 points, 5 assist and 1.2 steals over 35 games between BBL and Champions League.

Arnoldas Kulboka reportedly agrees to deal with Zalgiris Kaunas

Lithuanian forward Arnoldas Kulboka has agreed to a deal with EuroLeague’s Zalgiris Kaunas, according to the Spanish website Encestando.

There’s belief that the 22-year-old Kulboka will remain with Spanish ACB club Bilbao on loan next season, Encestando reports.

The Charlotte Hornets hold Kulboka’s NBA rights.

Malcolm Delaney clears air over rumors, says he’d love to finish career in Barcelona

Barcelona guard Malcolm Delaney cleared the air in the wake of the rumors surrounding him. Delaney confirmed that Olympiacos and Milan have expressed interest in him but no offer has been made. Also, the former NBA guard reiterated that he’s not a free agent and that he’d love to finish his career in Barcelona.

Cedevita Olimpija part ways with Bratoz and Artis

Dominic Artis played four games for Cedevita Olimpija in the ABA League, averaging 6.8 points, 2.3 assists and 1.3 steals in 13.3 minutes. He showed his best performance of the season in Round 21 of the regional competition with the Budućnost VOLI, when he scored 12 points in 19 minutes of the game.

In the 2019/20 competitive season, Domen Bratož failed to register in the statistics departement in 15 seconds in the match against FMP in ABA League.

Kostas Koufos, CSKA Moscow have dual option to opt out at the end of the season

Kostas Koufos is expected to leave CSKA Moscow with the arrival of Nikola Milutinov, according to Ria Novosti.
The Greek big man was signed to a two-year deal last summer but he has been limited by injuries.
Koufos averaged 3.7 points and 2.8 rebounds in EuroLeague and 8.4 points and 5.2 rebounds in VTB League.

Koufos and CSKA Moscow have a dual option to opt out of the deal at the end of the current season, a source told Sportando.

The Greek big man is expected to generate big interest from both NBA and EuroLeague teams if he becomes free agent this summer.

New Orleans Pelicans interested in Elijah Bryant

The New Orleans Pelicans are interested in Maccabi Tel Aviv guard Elijah Bryant, an Israeli league source told Emiliano Carchia of Sportando.
The guard out of BYU this year played 46 games for Maccabi tel Aviv between Euroleague and Winner League, with averages of 9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.1 assist, shooting 46% from the field, 36% from beyond the arc and 80% from the foul line.
Bryant played the 2019 Las Vegas Summer league for the Milwaukee Bucks (14.2 points, 3.2 assist, 53% FG, 50% 3p, 83% FT)

Nikola Milutinov to sign 3-year deal with CSKA for €3M per season

Nikola Milutinov will sign a three-year deal with CSKA Moscow in the range of €3 million per season, a source told Sportando.

Barcelona was also pursuing Milutinov and put on the table around €7 million in three years.

Eurodevotion had the scoop on the agreement and Eurohoops’ Aris Barkas first reported about the length of the deal.

NBL and team owners ask players to agree on a 50% pay cut for next season

Australian NBL players were told in a conference call on Thursday that the league and team owners asked players to agree on the following, or risk being stood down, a league source told Sportando.

– A 50% pay cut (capped at minimum wage).
– No career-ending injury insurance
– No health insurance.
– Development Player wave reduced fro $17K to $15K.

Despite the league won’t be starting in less than five months, NBL is using coronavirus pandemic to ask a reduction of salaries for the players.

The actual Collective Bargaining Agreement states the following:

  • Minimum salaries for players will be set at $55,000 – an increase of 38 per cent since 2016;
  • Development Players will receive a minimum salary for the first time, set at $17,000 for the NBL Season;
  • The salary cap for each club will increase from $1.1 million in 2016 to $1.43 million in 2019/20;
  • Increased support from the NBL and Clubs for the ABPA Player Development Program which will provide players with a range of programs including access to mental health support, education grants and assistance in career transition
  • Clubs will provide health insurance for all players and there will be improved salary protection for injured players; and
  • More players will have the flexibility to play in other leagues at the completion of the Hungry Jack’s NBL season, enabling greater earning capacity and continued development

Sportando reached out to NBL owner Larry Kestelman asking about the report.

“What we are doing is seeing how we can look after our players during this terrible time around the world” he said. “10s of Millions of people have been stood down and we believe as a league we are in a good position to avoid that. We are having productive conversations with the Players association and confident we will find common ground.  It’s a tough time for all, but by working together we will come out the other end strong. We are still confident we will get our season away as have 6 months to get through this and feel lucky we are in our off season” Kestelman added.

Ethan Happ may get Italian passport, agent says

Big man Ethan Happ could become Italian soon, according to his agent Mario Scotti.

“Ethan may get Italian passport. We are working on it. His great-grandparents are from Sicily” Mario Scotti told La Provincia di Cremona. “His status would change and also his market value. Virtus Bologna and Olimpia Milano would be the front runners”.

Happ was averaging 18 points, 8.4 rebounds, 2.4 assists in 16 Serie A games with Vanoli Cremona where he landed on loan from Olympiacos.

Fenerbahce reportedly offer a contract with salary reduction to Zeljko Obradovic

Conflicting rumors from Turkey about Zeljko Obradovic’s future in Fenerbahce.

In recent days there had been talk of a possible farewell between the Serbian Head Coach and the Turkish powerhouse with Sarunas Jasikevicius as a possible replacement candidate.

In fact Jasikevius and Obradovic will be free agent this summer.

But, as reported by Aksam, Fenerbahce offered a 1.650 million euros contract during the season to Obradovic. A 50% reduction on the previous contract and on the club’s budget.

Obradovic has not yes responded to the proposal.
