London Lions announces Lorenzo Cugini

The London Lions announces their latest acquisition of Lorenzo Cugini to the men’s roster for the 2021-22 season.

At six-foot-seven, the Italian small forward launched his career in the United States with the High Point University Panthers, before joining Norway’s Gimble BBK in 2017-18. During this time there, he averaged 23.4 points per game, 7.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists. He arrives in London after having spent last season in Spain with Destino Palencia, where he shot 40% from 3pt in Spain’s LEB Gold.

“Cugini gave a brilliant performance during his season in Norway, and though his season in Spain was cut short due to the pandemic, he’s coming in with great knowledge of the European circuit and a high calibre of sportsmanship. We’re excited to be welcoming him onboard this season.”

Cugini’s announcement comes as the Lions prepare to take on Italian side Treviso in a qualifying game for the Basketball Champions League. In what is sure to be a sensational watch, the Qualification Round commences on 13 September, with the Lions needing to win three games in the space of five days in order to progress to the regular season.

SIG Strasbourg lands rookie Matt Mitchell

SIG Strasbourg announced the signing of Matt Mitchell.

The rookie forward ended his senior year at San Diego State with averages of 15.4 points, 5.5 rebounds, 2 assist and 1.4 steals.

Sporting Director Nicola Alberani: “I am very happy that we had the ability to sign Matt Mitchell. He has the exact profile of what we were looking for in this position. We think that taking a rookie is a good choice because we have a lot of experienced players who will be able to accompany and guide him”

Tofas keeps Tomislav Zubcic, Jeremy Simmons

Tomislav Zubcic and Jeremy Simmons will play for Tofas again next season, the turkish team announced.

The Croatian comes from a very good season, with over 14 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists per game between BSL and BCL.

Simmons last year averaged 9.6 points, 4.8 rebounds and 0.7 blocks per game, shooting with an excellent 67% from the field.

Peter Jok returns to Cholet

Cholet Basket announced the return of Peter Jok.

Jok spent last year with UCAM Murcia, averaging 6.6 points and 2.1 rebounds per game in ACB.

The guard played with Cholet in 2019/20 (10.3 ppg, 3.1 rpg), his first season in Europe.

Stelmet Zielona Gora lands Andy Mazurczak

Andy Mazurczak is a new player of Stelmet Zielona Gora, the Polish team announced.

Last year the point guard averaged over 10 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assist per game for MKS Dabrowa Gornicza.

Casper Ware to join Enisey Krasnoyarsk

Casper Ware accepted Enisey Krasnoyarsk’s offer and will play the next season in VTB League.

The player also had a proposal to stay in NBL, the league in which he has played since the 2016/17 season.

Last year Ware averaged over 17 points and 4 assists for the Sidney Kings.

Panathinaikos announces Vassilis Kavvadas

Panathinaikos OPAP has signed Vassilis Kavvadas (30, 2.06 meters) for the next two years (1+1).

Vassilis Kavvadas (born in December 28, 1991) is a Greek basketball player who last played for Iraklis of the Greek Basket League.

After playing with Ionikos Nikaias at the youth levels, and in the 3rd-tier level amateur competition Greek C League, Kavvadas began his professional career with the 1st-tier Greek League club Panionios, during the 2010–11 season, after having originally signed with the Greek League club Maroussi. He joined the Greek EuroLeague club Olympiacos in 2013. In 2015, he was loaned by Olympiacos to Arkadikos, for the 2015–16 season.

On July 26, 2016, Kavvadas signed a two-year deal with the Greek team Aris Thessaloniki.

On November 24, 2017, Kavvadas signed with the Greek team AEK Athens for the rest of the 2017–18 season, with an option for renewal for another year. With AEK, he won the Greek Cup title, in 2018.

On July 28, 2019, Kavvadas moved back to Thessaloniki and signed with Iraklis. He averaged 9.1 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. On July 29, 2020, he renewed his contract with the team. In 2020-2021 season he averaged 12.3 points, 8.9 rebounds per game.

Kavvadas played at the 2009 FIBA Europe Under-18 Championship, with the Under-18 national team of Greece.

In 2012, Kavvadas was invited to train with the senior men’s Greek national basketball team, for the first time. He played with the senior men’s Greek national team at the EuroBasket 2013. In the summer of 2021 he played in the pre-Olympic tournament of Canada with the senior men’s Greek national team.

C.J. Burks signs with Khimik

Former Marshall guard C.J. Burks has signed a deal with Khimik in Ukraine, sources told Sportando.

Burks spent last season in Iceland, averaging 18 points per game on 42.5% from three. He led his team, Keflavik, to the Icelandic league’s finals.

Josh Magette joins Tasmania JackJumpers

The Tasmania JackJumpers have announced the signing of US import Josh Magette on a one-year contract with the club for the 2021/22 Hungry Jack’s NBL Season.

Magette just returned from the Tokyo Olympic Games, where he was a member of the Team USA Select Team. The 31-year-old has previously represented the USA as a member of the 2020 USA Basketball Men’s AmeriCup Qualifying Team.

The point guard spent last year in Turkey with Darussafaka, where he averaged 9.6 points, 4.1 assist and 1.4 steals.

Zach Hankins joins South East Melbourne Phoenix

Zach Hankins is a new player of South East Melbourne Phoenix.

The big man averaged over 11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 blocks per game in BCL for Nymburk in the 2019/20 season.

Hankins will play for the Phoenix Suns in the NBA Summer League.

Melbourne United sign German NBA prospect Ariel Hukporti as NBL Next Star

Melbourne United has signed 19-year-old German NBA prospect Ariel Hukporti for the 2021-22 Hungry Jack’s NBL Season via the League’s Next Star program.

The highly touted seven-footer will use his time in the NBL to prepare for the 2022 NBA Draft.

Hukporti spent last year with Nevezis, averaging 10.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per game in the Lithuanian league.

Lamar Patterson stays with Brisbane Bullets

The Brisbane Bullets are delighted to welcome back Lamar Patterson on a one-year contract for the 2021/22 Hungry Jack’s NBL Season.

 

Patterson first joined the Bullets in 2018 and quickly became a fan favourite amongst the Brisbane community. The 29-year-old made the All-NBL First Team in 2019 and 2020 and has established himself as one of the league’s premier imports.

 

The Pennsylvania native played 17 games for the Bullets last season after a short stint with the New Zealand Breakers. Patterson has averaged 17.8 points, 5.6 rebounds and 3.8 assists in his NBL career.

 

Prior to playing in the NBL, Patterson played for the NBA’s Atlanta Hawks from 2015-2017 while also playing professionally across the globe.

Zalgiris Kaunas signs Janis Strelnieks

Zalgiris Kaunas landed a veteran floor general still in the prime of his career by signing guard Janis Strelnieks for the upcoming season.

Strelnieks, standing at 191 cm tall, arrives from CSKA Moscow, where he played the previous two seasons. He helped CSKA reach the last Final Four with 4.4 points and 1.6 assists per game in a reserve role of 14 minutes on average.

Before that, the 31-year-old played two EuroLeague seasons each with Olympiacos Piraeus and Brose Bamberg after having debuted in the competition with Budivelnik Kiev in 2013-14.

Through 157 EuroLeague games over seven seasons, Strelnieks has averaged 8.1 points, 2.4 assists and 1.6 rebounds.

He also has parts of six EuroCup seasons under his belt – for Bamberg, Kiev, Spartak St Petersburg and Ventspils in his native Latvia – for slightly higher averages of 8.3 points, 3. 0 assists and 1.9 rebounds in 66 games.

Strelnieks has also been a constant figure for Latvia‘s national team, having represented the team since 2010. In the 2019 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers, the guard averaged 23.2 points and 6.8 assists.

Meanwhile, Zalgiris also has a subtraction from the roster, as Martinas Geben will be leaving Kaunas. The big man spent the last two seasons in Kaunas and decided to cut his contract with Zalgiris short, moving to Brose Bamberg on a one-year deal.

The Center averaged 8 minutes of action on the court in the EuroLeague, putting up 3.3 points, 2.1 rebounds and an efficiency of 4.5 per game.

In the Lithuanian basketball league the 26-year-old had much higher averages, as he put up 7.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and 10.7 efficiency per contest.

Erik McCree agrees to terms with Peristeri

Former Louisiana Tech forward Erik McCree has agreed to a deal with Greek team Peristeri of the Basketball Champions League, sources told Sportando.

McCree most recently played in France where he averaged 13.8 points, 6.7 rebounds and 3.4 assists in 11 games for BCM Gravelines-Dunkerque last season.

McCree has also played in Italy and Denmark during his time in Europe. He also appeared in four games in the NBA with the Utah Jazz in 2017-18.

Nic Moore signing with MKS Dabrowa Gornicza

Former Southern Methodist point guard Nic Moore is signing a deal with MKS Dabrowa Gornicza in Poland, sources told Sportando.

Moore has spent five seasons in Europe, most recently in Portugal where he averaged 7.7 points and 4.6 assists per game for Benfica. He also played in Italy and France.

Maliek White signs with Egis Kormend

Former Providence guard Maliek White has signed a contract with Egis Kormend in Hungary, sources told Sportando.

White is coming off a productive rookie season in Georgia where he averaged 16.2 points, a league-leading seven assists and 5.4 rebounds per game, helping Rustavi win the national championship.
