Real Madrid made it six wins in a row at home by holding off Zenit St Petersburg 79-72 on Thursday night. The first half was closely contested with defenses largely on top and it was 36-31 at the break.
Real started the second half with a 20-3 run to take control, and although Zenit got closer with a 0-9 run entirely through Austin Hollins early in the fourth, the margin was too big to be overcome and Real never looked seriously troubled.
Walter Tavares powered the home team with a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Alberto Abalde scored 16 points. Anthony Randolph and Nicolas Laprovittola both added 11 and Trey Thompkins 10. Hollins led the scoring for Zenit with 15 points, KC Rivers netted 12 against his former club and Kevin Pangos also scored 12. Real improved to 8-5, climbing above Zenit (7-4) in the standings.
