The head coach of our men’s pro team, Pedro Martínez, and Valencia Basket have reached an agreement for the Catalan coach to extend his contract with the “taronja” club for one additional season beyond the one he was already committed to, prolonging his stay at least until the end of the 2026-27 season.
Martínez returned in the summer of 2024 for a second stint in charge of the taronja bench, after having won the Liga Endesa title and led the team to two other finals in the second year of his first spell at the Club, where he coached the men’s first team from 2015 to 2017.
With the decisive stretch of the season just about to begin, the taronja team has remained among the top four in the Liga Endesa without interruption since Round 3. It also held the top spot in the ACB for seven consecutive rounds, from Round 10 to 16—something that hadn’t happened in the previous seven years. In the BKT EuroCup, the team finished the group stage with the best record, eventually falling on the final play of Game 3 in a hard-fought semifinal series against Hapoel Shlomo Tel Aviv.
All this comes in a season in which the taronja team has so far achieved a 75.5% win rate across all competitions (a 37-12 record). Pedro Martínez has coached Valencia Basket in 175 games to date, placing him fourth on the club’s all-time coaching appearances list, behind Miki Vukovic (231), Jaume Ponsarnau (201), and Velimir Perasovic (187). However, his impressive 75.4% win percentage (132-43) is the best in the club’s history.
Valencia Basket’s men’s sporting director, Luis Arbalejo, commented on the extension by saying, “Pedro’s role as a coach is key for us in building the project we’re aiming for. Renewing his contract now, before the season ends or even knowing which European competition we’ll be playing in, is a clear sign of our full confidence in him. His high standards in our daily work are part of our identity, and we believe he makes all of us better. Moreover, the team’s playing style and philosophy are exactly what we want to build our future project on over the coming years.”
