Paulius Motiejunas: “NBA Europe? We must protect basketball together, not compete with each other”

Paulius Motiejunas, CEO of the EuroLeague, spoke about the NBA project and the prospect of a new European league.

Paulius Motiejunas, CEO of the EuroLeague, spoke to SportsPro’s microphones about the NBA’s plan to create a league in Europe. Below are his statements.

Motiejunas’ words: “Another league in Europe makes no sense to me. We already have four different leagues, we have the best possible product as the EuroLeague, I think it is something that needs to be evaluated because what the clubs and the league have done in 25 years is incredible. I understand the NBA’s approach and I appreciate its greatness: it is the number one basketball league in the world. But I don’t like their mentality of coming in and trying to teach everybody how to do it. Of course everybody wants to listen to the NBA or see what they have to offer. But to have five championships would be to forget the fans. You turn on the TV and you don’t know which team is playing which opponent. When we think about the NBA, FIBA and the EuroLeague, I think it is necessary to protect basketball and compete with other sports and grow the game of basketball. I understand the desire to expand and come and play NBA games and so on. But we, together, have to protect basketball and if we compete with each other, with each other, then other sports will gain momentum, become better than us and we are here to protect basketball”.
