Paulius Motiejunas, CEO of EuroLeague, gave an interview to SKWEEK in which he talked about the possibility of a Dubai team joining EuroLeague and the stages of this project. These are his statements.
About the interest in Dubai: “Obviously, Dubai and the Middle East are regions where many events and championships are coming. So it is normal that we, as EuroLeague, are also interested”.
On the time needed: “Of course there are doubts, but we see no doubt in the faces of the people behind the project. If they believe in the project and think they can move it forward, we think that’s an important part of success,” Motiejunas said. It is a challenge for everybody, but it is a new market. That’s why the negotiations are so difficult and take so long.
On Dubai’s entry into the ABA Liga: “All our clubs play in domestic competitions and the EuroLeague, so there has to be equal rights for everyone,” Motiejunas explained. “We used to say they should have their national competition as well. Now the ABA League will replace their national competition.”
The Dubai project stages: “We want to minimize the risks, we really love the brand and the image that EuroLeague has. That’s why the offer was, ‘Let’s try something small. That’s why we’re talking about the EuroCup, and that’s why we’re talking about a chance for them to convince everybody that they’re ready for EuroLeague.
