The second NBA game on European soil between the Orlando Magic and the Memphis Grizzlies will take place tonight in London, continuing the league’s international showcase.
Ahead of the matchup, Paolo Banchero spoke candidly during media day about his relationship with Italy and Italian basketball, addressing the tension that followed his decision to represent the United States at the FIBA World Cup.
Speaking to the Italian press, as reported by Corriere dello Sport, the Orlando forward shared a message of reconciliation:
“I just want to say one thing: I hope that the relationship between us can be rebuilt. Obviously, I know that after my decision to play the World Cup with the United States, there was no good blood between us. We played against Italy and I heard some boos or things like that, so I know how Italian fans feel about me. I hope that one day we can recover.”
A door still open
Despite the strain, Banchero underlined that his ties with parts of the Italian basketball world remain intact:
“I still have good relationships with the coach and with some of the players.”
The comments come at a symbolic moment, with Banchero once again in the spotlight on European soil. As Orlando and Memphis take center stage in London, the Magic star made it clear that, while his national team choice is firm, his connection to Italy is far from closed.
