The Nuggets confirmed the discontinuity that marked their start to the regular season by losing to the Wizards despite Nikola Jokic’s career-high.
The center scored an impressive 56 points, one less than all his teammates combined, with 16 rebounds and 8 assists.
After the game Jokic definitely made no secret of the issues affecting the team, which is ninth in the West with 11 wins in 21 games.
“I think today and the last couple games were really bad for us,” Jokic said. “We are really going in the wrong direction. I think it’s everybody’s fault.”
“In my country, where I’m coming from, after this kind of stretch, you’re going to get paycheck that is a little bit less than you had hoped,” the Serbian star said, drawing a laugh. “Maybe that’s what we need to do. Maybe a little motivation”.
Jokic is currently the league’s best rebounder with 13.6 per game, and is also second in points (31.4) and assists (10.3). Hard to do better than that.
The Nuggets’ main problem is the bench, with the front office betting on several young players selected late in the first round to replace experienced players such as Jeff Green, Bruce Brown, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope.
The result is that only the Knicks are using less their second unit, and per NBA.com the Nuggets’ reserves are shooting 38 percent from the field, worst in the league.
