The NBA has canceled the Atlanta Hawks’ planned theme night celebrating Magic City, saying it acted in response to “concerns” raised by a broad array of league stakeholders.
Commissioner Adam Silver said the league reached out to Hawks leadership to understand the plan and rationale, but concluded that canceling the promotion was “the right decision for the broader NBA community,” referencing concerns from fans, partners and employees.
Atlanta’s event had been billed as a tribute to an “iconic cultural institution,” featuring food (including Magic City’s famous lemon pepper wings, linked to former Hawk Lou Williams), music and exclusive merchandise; Spurs center Luke Kornet was among those who publicly objected to promoting a strip club.
