NBA Commissioner Adam Silver openly acknowledged that the league’s latest attempt to reformat the All-Star Game “was a miss.”
This year’s format featured a four-team tournament, including three teams of NBA All-Stars and a fourth team comprised of Rising Stars. The event received heavy criticism, particularly regarding long breaks between games and lack of engagement.
“We’re not there yet in creating an All-Star experience we can be proud of,” Silver admitted.
The NBA plans to redesign the format once again for 2026, and Silver suggested the idea of adding an international element, especially since the 2026 All-Star Game will be broadcast by NBC, immediately following the Winter Olympics.
A “USA vs The World” matchup has been floated, though Silver questioned the fairness of grouping all international players into one team given today’s level of global talent.
The NBA has experimented in recent years with:
-
East vs West
-
Team captains drafting squads
-
Elam Ending
-
This season’s mini-tournament
A new solution is now needed to restore relevance and competitiveness to the event.
