Jordi Bertomeu has been forced to leave the competition design that he sought to impose, which wanted an increasingly closed Euroleague but with a system of promotions and relegation from a second division that would be the Eurocup. This formula will not come to fruition because of the rebellion of a good part of the owner clubs, which a few weeks ago threatened to depose Bertomeu if he did not allow them to intervene directly in the management, something to which the CEO of the Euroleague agreed.
One of the requirements of the owner clubs is to eliminate the Eurocup, which costs about 7 million euros when it generates under 3 million. The teams believe that the money that would be saved by eliminating the second ECA competition (Euroleague Commercial Assets) could be shared by themselves to improve their battered economies.
Keep in mind that the ECA’s main interest in the Eurocup was political, to subtract teams from the FIBA Champions League. On the other hand, it allowed them to say that their competition was not closed. It cannot be ruled out that Bertomeu now uses the Eurocup as a bargaining chip to achieve peace with FIBA.
