In an exclusive interview with Corriere della Sera, Nicolò Melli spoke about his farewell to Olimpia Milano and how it came about. These are the words of the captain of the national team.
On the noise after his departure: “Before the noise, you had to imagine leaving Milan: I was not thinking of leaving. I respect the club’s legitimate decision, but I was pleased with the affection I received”.
On whether he would have stayed in Milan: “Of course. But things are done in two. That was not the case. I regret that it is said and written that I left Milan”.
If the decision of Milan is for technical reasons: “This is not a question that should be asked of me. After the media day after the Scudetto, I spoke with Ettore Messina and we even went into detail about the offer the club made me in April, the only one that came in those months. I said let’s find each other and deal with it; I played 7-8 years at Olimpia and I’m the captain, all that has value, right? Also, it is not only important what you do, but how you do it. The meeting was positive and focused. Two or three days ago, I received a phone call that lasted 45 seconds in which Hector informed me that the company had decided to go in a different direction. I repeat: a legitimate decision, but it was not explained to me whether the reason was technical or not”.
On whether he is surprised: “It is part of the rules of the game, it is only a surprise if you are not part of this world. I am neither the first nor the last to change teams”.
