March Madness remains the biggest betting event in the U.S., with the American Gaming Association (AGA) estimating $3.1 billion in wagers on the NCAA men’s and women’s tournaments. This marks a 15% year-over-year increase and more than double the Super Bowl’s $1.4 billion betting handle.
Women’s college basketball continues to grow in betting popularity, with BetMGM reporting a 35% increase in wagers. Following Caitlin Clark’s transition to the WNBA, new stars like JuJu Watkins (USC) and Paige Bueckers (UConn) are driving interest.
However, a 2024 NCAA study found that 73% of gambling-related harassment toward athletes occurs during March Madness, with women receiving 59% more abusive messages than men.
