Boston Celtics without Jayson Tatum. The reaction? No panic, just determination, and victory in Game 5 with the New York Knicks.
‘The air went out of the room after hearing that,’ Jaylen Brown said in reference to Jayson Tatum’s injury. ‘But we didn’t want to give up or make excuses. We didn’t want to go out like that.’
With a joint speech between Brown, Al Horford and coach Joe Mazzulla, the team shifted gears. ‘We said to each other: let’s go out and defend as much as we can. Just that.’
‘We lost an offensive motor, so the strategy was clear: defensive intensity,’ added Brown, author of 26 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds.
Luke Kornet was also an unexpected protagonist: 10 points, nine rebounds and seven wicks. ‘I just felt like giving energy. It was special to be useful to the team.’
Coach Mazzulla explained: ‘Porzingis couldn’t breathe. It was an agreement between me and him: he was only available in an emergency.’
Derrick White, who scored 34 points with seven threes, helped Brown manage the weight of the attack, in a more fluid and collective system.
‘My role is to lead, to be myself, to do what it takes to push this team forward,’ Brown concluded.
