Ja Morant’s Lawyers Argue Self-Defense in Assault Case, Judge Sets December Hearing

Lawyers for Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant argued self-defence in the assault on a teenager during a basketball game in his home

Lawyers for Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant argued self-defence in the assault on a teenager during a basketball game in his home.

The judge ruled that the lawyers could support this defence and set a hearing for December.

Morant’s lawyers argue that under the state’s ‘stand your ground’ law, Morant should be immune from liability because he felt threatened inside his home.

The ‘stand your ground’ law is generally used in criminal cases, but the judge opened up the possibility of applying it in civil cases as well.

The accusing teenager claims that Morant and a friend assaulted him and filed a lawsuit against them. Morant filed a countersuit against the teenager.

The lawsuit raised complex legal issues, including the debate over self-defence and the applicability of state law.

The NBA suspended Morant for the first 25 games of the season because of a video in which he displayed a gun. Morant apologised for both videos.
