“I apologize.” The words of Neven Spahija, coach of Reyer Venezia, put an end to any controversy surrounding the spectacular derby between Umana Reyer Venezia and Tezenis Verona.
The Croatian coach was ejected with 5 minutes remaining in regulation time during the match, which his team eventually won in overtime. A crucial traveling violation called on Derek Willis during an offensive possession sparked his frustration. Video footage shows Spahija visibly upset with the referees’ decision.
These were Neven Spahija’s words in the press room: “I also want to apologize to the entire Italian basketball organization and the referees for my behavior. I am too experienced a coach to fall into these mistakes, and I hope it won’t happen again because the referees didn’t deserve it.”
The Venetian team’s response was then vigorous, overcoming a 6-point deficit following two free throws by Sanders, which resulted from that technical foul.
