The groups for the FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup 2020 were confirmed in Friday’s draw ceremony in the Bulgarian capital Sofia, with the participating teams learning their opponents.
The teams were divided into four groups of four teams each for the sixth edition of the event, with the hosts Bulgaria drawn together with China, Dominican Republic and France in Group B.
The results of the draw are as follows:
Group A: Canada, Australia, Italy, Egypt
Group B: China, Dominican Republic, France, Bulgaria
Group C: Turkey, Korea, Argentina, Spain
Group D: Russia, USA, Mali, Japan/New Zealand
Following the cancellation of the FIBA U16 Asia Championship, the qualification of the Asia/Oceania teams was based on the FIBA World Ranking Youth Men, presented by Nike, with Australia, China and Korea claiming berths as the three best-ranked countries.
As Japan and New Zealand have an identical number of points in the ranking, the fourth team from the region will be decided by games between the two, played at a neutral venue on a date between now and the start of the World Cup.
All 16 teams participating in the event will qualify for the Final Phase of the competition, with the single-elimination format in place from the Round of 16 onwards.

The defending champions USA will be aiming to capture their sixth consecutive FIBA U17 Basketball World Cup title, with no other country winning it since the event was launched in 2010.
The 2020 edition of the tournament will take place from July 4-12 in Sofia, Bulgaria.
Media professionals registered in the FIBA Media Portal will be able to apply for this event as of Monday, June 1. The deadline to apply is Monday, June 29.
