FIBA General Secretary Andreas Zagklis: “NBA in Europe? Negotiations underway”

FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis says negotiations are underway to create an NBA league in Europe.

FIBA and the NBA are in talks to some media, including The Athletic, to create a potential NBA league in Europe, which could compete with the EuroLeague and national leagues. FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis stated that European basketball is not fully utilizing its commercial potential, and the NBA could provide significant marketing power. Discussions also focus on the EuroLeague, with top clubs like Real Madrid and Barcelona reportedly considering not renewing their licenses after 2025-26.

Additionally, FIBA and the NBA are negotiating calendar adjustments to facilitate participation in the 2028 Olympic qualifiers. Logistical challenges for the Los Angeles Olympics, particularly if the Clippers reach the NBA Finals, are another key issue. According to Zagklis, collaboration between the parties remains crucial for the sport’s growth.
