FIBA Europe Executive Committee takes important decisions following events in Ukraine

Among other decisions, FIBA has suspended Russia's candidacy for EuroBasket 2025

Following the initial decisions of FIBA communicated yesterday, the FIBA Europe Executive Committee convened on Wednesday, March 2, to take further necessary decisions in view of recent events in Ukraine.

The Committee took those decisions to safeguard the integrity of competitions and the safety of all participants, as well as to ensure fairness for Ukrainian players, teams, clubs and officials who are currently unable to participate in FIBA Europe events.

The Executive Committee members have decided to implement FIBA’s decisions at FIBA Europe competitions with immediate effect and as follows:

To not allow the participation of Russian teams in FIBA Europe club competitions until further notice;
To not allow the participation of Russian officials, including delegates, supervisors, referees etc. in FIBA Europe competitions until further notice;
All games of Ukrainian clubs in FIBA Europe club competitions must be played outside of the territory of Ukraine but within the European continent;
To suspend the candidature of Russia for FIBA EuroBasket 2025, while the bidding procedure will go ahead as planned.
In line with the decisions, the 2021-22 season of FIBA Europe club competitions will proceed without Russian teams, with EuroLeague Women, EuroCup Women and FIBA Europe Cup impacted.

Following the exclusion of UMMC Ekaterinburg, Dynamo Kursk and MBA Moscow from EuroLeague Women, the Quarter-Final pairings and the list of teams qualified for EuroCup Women will be revised as per the rankings.

As the fifth-placed teams in the respective groups, TTT Riga and Spar Girona, will replace UMMC Ekaterinburg and Dynamo Kursk in the Quarter-Finals. Meanwhile, KSC Szekszard and Galatasaray will replace TTT Riga and Spar Girona in the EuroCup Women Quarter-Finals.

The revised EuroLeague Women Quarter-Final pairings are as follows:

Perfumerias Avenida (ESP) v Spar Girona (ESP)
Sopron Basket (HUN) v BLMA (FRA)
Fenerbahce Safiport (TUR) v TTT Riga (LAT)
ZVVZ USK Praha (CZE) v Beretta Famila Schio (ITA)

Following the exclusion of Saratov Avtodor from FIBA Europe Cup, they will be replaced in the Quarter-Finals by the next best team from Group L of the Second Round, Bakken Bears, with the pairings revised as per the rankings.

The revised FIBA Europe Cup Quarter-Final pairings are as follows:

ZZ Leiden (NED) v Hakro Merlins Crailsheim (GER)
Bahcesehir College (TUR) v Sporting CP (POR)
Unahotels Reggio Emilia (ITA) v Legia Warszawa (POL)
CSM CSU Oradea (ROU) v Bakken Bears (DEN)

FIBA Europe continues to closely monitor the situation together with FIBA. It may adapt its decisions and measures according to future developments. FIBA Europe regrets the consequences for individuals, clubs and national teams and hopes that all members of the European Basketball family will be united again in peace very soon.
