Michael Malone made waves in his ESPN analyst debut, declaring Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as the true MVP after Game 1 of the West Finals. SGA posted 31 points, 9 assists and 5 rebounds in the Thunder’s win over Minnesota.
“He proved today why he’s the MVP of this league,” said Malone — a surprising statement from the former Nuggets coach who, just in March, had been campaigning hard for Nikola Jokic.
Though some saw it as a dig at Jokic, Malone had previously said he would be happy for Shai if he won. Now, with no team ties, Malone seems to have embraced that view publicly.
