EuroLeague: will Maccabi return to play in Israel? Panathinaikos (and others) say no

EuroLeague, can Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv return to Israel? Panathinaikos (and some others club) say no.

Will Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv be able to play in Israel again? This is a big question in the last weeks of the EuroLeague, as the Israeli club has been forced to play in Belgrade, without the support of its fans, due to the war situation in the country. Recently, ECA Head of Competitions Diego Guillen visited Tel Aviv to see for himself the conditions in the Israeli city and to assess whether there are criteria to allow Maccabi to play in front of their own fans again.

According to Walla Sport, however, there is an obstacle represented by Panathinaikos (and not only): the Greek club has reportedly said that if Maccabi were to return to play in Israel, they would not take part in the match and would not be present. The reason would be purely sporting and not political, as Giannakopoulos’ clun believes that since some teams have played Maccabi on a neutral pitch, it would not be “fair” to the remaining teams to force them to face the Tel Aviv club in front of 10,000 fans.
