The EuroLeague has unveiled its long-anticipated expansion plan, aiming to increase the competition to 20 teams. During a pivotal two-day shareholders’ meeting, while no final decisions were made, two distinct format options were presented, each with significant implications for the league’s structure.
The first option maintains the current round-robin format, expanding to 38 rounds with nine double-game weeks. This would require the season to start just a week after EuroBasket 2025, posing scheduling challenges.
The alternative introduces a conference system:
- Two conferences of 10 teams each
- 18 intra-conference games
- One inter-conference game per team (home/away), totaling 28 games
- Only four double-game weeks
While this structure offers a more manageable calendar, it reduces the number of home games, potentially impacting club revenues.
