The EuroLeague’s CEO Paulius Motiejunas released some statements to Mozzart Sport about various teams. He talked about the “salary cap”, the ABA league teams (in particoular the serbian teams), and the Dubai Basket’s project.
About the “salary cap”: “We needed a lot of time to find sets that would be approved by the clubs, we’re excited to see how it will look. We made it in order to control the wagebill, and increase the level of all participants. It’s not a slaray cap, we’re not setting a limit. Some want to spend more, some less. As a former General Manager of a Euroleague team, I think it will be interesting to see strategies with the budget, you’ll need to put effort into building a team.”
About the importance of the ABA league teams: “Passion of Serbian fans is something outstanding. We would like to punish them less when they don’t respect all the rules, fans especially, but we really respect what Partizan Mozzart Bet Belgrade and Crvena Zvezda Meridanbet Belgrade are doing. We’re not thinking about structural changes, we have 13 A-licensed teams, but we definitely follow Belgrade teams, we’re pleased that they are part of the Euroleague. Both teams are together here for some time, and I hope they will be here long-term. Few years ago we had a rule of ABA League champions getting into the Euroleague. Of course, ABA trophy is a bonus but the guarantee is not the case anymore. For me it’s tough to see only one team from Belgrade, I think there would be a problem if we say that just the champion of ABA will play the Euroleague, for quite some time we’ve been looking at both clubs equally as participants. I also have to say that Buducnost VOLI Podgorica and Cedevita Olimpija Ljubljana are doing well in the Eurocup, we are satisfied with ABA League and will keep following them.”
And in the end, about the Dubai Basket’s project: “Brave decision to bring them into ABA, but clearly a good one. Dubai looks like a serious partner, I’m personally going to Dubai on Monday to watch them against Partizan to see how it all looks, big respect for ABA league for that decision. We are talking with Dubai, it depends a lot on whether or not are we expanding the league. Clubs will have the final say, I’m going there to discuss. We told them they need a domestic competition, and in this case it’s ABA, I can’t rule out any scenarios.”
