Three years after Russian clubs were expelled from the EuroLeague due to the Ukraine conflict, their return could be on the horizon. Goran Šašić, EuroLeague Coaching Board executive director, hinted at this possibility in an interview with TASS: “In the last 48 hours, we’ve seen major geopolitical shifts. EuroLeague’s planned expansion to 20 teams could signal the return of Russian clubs.”
The CSKA Moscow, which still holds an A license, would likely be the first team reinstated. The second spot could go to either Zenit St. Petersburg or Unics Kazan, with Zenit reportedly having the edge. Despite their absence from the competition, Russian teams have maintained voting rights in EuroLeague shareholder meetings.
If confirmed, this move would mark a significant turning point for European basketball.
