EuroBasket 2029 to open at Santiago Bernabéu with 80,000 fans

Spain wins hosting rights for EuroBasket 2029, with a record-breaking opener planned at Real Madrid’s stadium

EuroBasket 2029 will tip off in historic fashion, as the tournament’s opening game is set to take place at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid with an expected crowd of 80,000 spectators. The announcement came from FIBA Europe’s Executive Board, which selected Spain over Greece to be the primary host of the event.

Spain will stage the group featuring the national team and all knockout rounds, including the final. Greece, Estonia, and Slovenia will serve as co-hosts for the other preliminary round groups, maintaining the multi-host format introduced in 2015.

The total budget for the event is estimated at €25 million, and the Madrid region projects a financial impact of over €270 million. This will mark the fourth time Spain hosts EuroBasket — after 1973, 1997, and 2007 — but never before with such a spectacular and high-profile launch.

If confirmed, the opener at the Bernabéu would set a new FIBA record for attendance at a single game
