During his interview with Discovery, Ettore Messina also spoke about his future and how he builds teams in today’s EuroLeague.
ON ROSTER CONSTRUCTION METHODS
“The number of players that are already proven is now that, 30-35 players of average age that cost a lot, also because the NBA attracts a lot. The others are bets. And by definition, they go right or they go wrong. We have had years where we have been right a lot and others where we have been less right. Mistakes are made in watching, talking, getting information, and maybe in the end the players don’t turn out to be one of them.
Athleticism is important, as is having players who are dangerous to shoot at. With this physicality, the fields are narrowing, you’ve got bigger and bigger physical masses in front of you, and if you don’t have an outside shot, it makes life very complicated. It’s not easy, you make mistakes and you have to navigate through them”.
ON HIS WAY OF WORKING
In my own small way, I have always tried to delegate even important parts of the work. What I have tried to learn from Pop is the ability to synthesise, to understand the two things that need to be done, even in a 20′ training session. That’s what I’ve been trying to learn more and more.
