Dwyane Wade publicly revealed that he had kidney surgery in December 2023 to remove a tumor that was later confirmed to be cancerous. The Hall of Famer shared his story on The Why with Dwyane Wade podcast, explaining that he sought medical attention after experiencing stomach and urinary issues following years without physical checkups.
Doctors recommended immediate surgery, leading to the removal of 40% of his right kidney. “Thank God that I did do the surgery,” Wade said, acknowledging the severity of the situation.
He described the experience as one of the lowest points in his life. “My family, my dad, my kids—they saw me weak for the first time,” Wade admitted. “But in that process of weakness, I found strength.”
Wade, a three-time NBA champion and Finals MVP in 2006, retired in 2019 after a 16-season career, primarily with the Miami Heat, where he remains the franchise leader in several categories.
