Dennis Rodman’s transfer to the San Antonio Spurs in 1993 was born with the clear intention of composing a formidable duo with David Robinson under the rim.

The reality was very different: the ‘worm’ struggled to bond with Robinson both on and off the court. Former Spurs reserve Jack Haley revealed, via Roland Lazenby, how Rodman had great difficulty interfacing with Robinson’s work ethic and intensity in training.

According to Haley, Robinson’s tendency to skip workouts for various reasons, such as tendinitis or pain, clashed with Rodman’s dedication to a strict routine.

Thus Haley: ‘Dennis is a workout guy. That caused a lot of problems’.

Despite Robinson’s efforts to bridge the gap off the court, offering invitations to lunch and trying to discuss basketball, Rodman was unresponsive: ‘Dave tried very hard to talk to Dennis Rodman to strike up a friendship…. Dennis would not respond.”
