Dejounte Murray Suffers Torn Achilles, Out for the Season

Pelicans guard goes down in loss to Celtics, dealing another blow to injury-riddled team

New Orleans Pelicans guard Dejounte Murray suffered a season-ending torn Achilles tendon during Friday’s 118-116 loss to the Boston Celtics, sources told ESPN. The injury was confirmed after initial tests, marking another devastating setback for the Pelicans.

Murray was hurt after chasing his own missed shot, collapsing to the floor while clutching his lower right leg. He managed to get up but limped off toward the Pelicans’ bench and was ruled out immediately.

“It’s extremely difficult to see a guy who means so much to our team go down like that,” head coach Willie Green said postgame.

Already missing Zion Williamson, Brandon Ingram, and Herb Jones, the Pelicans (12-27) now face another significant loss. Murray, who had already missed 17 games with a broken hand, was averaging 17.9 points, 7.6 assists, and 2.1 steals.

“It hurts a lot, I can’t lie,” said Trey Murphy III, who scored 40 points. “Sometimes God puts you through situations for a bigger reason.”
